East Coast Trip Part Three

November 5th, 2022 by Brom Taulborg

After we left Grand Island, NY we went to Albany, NY for the night, then, after Albany, we went to Portsmouth, NH for several nights. Then, we went to Bar Harbor, ME for a week. The following dates are what we did there.

September 14th 2022:

On our first full day, we hiked to the top of the Beehive (a massive rock formation that looks like a huge beehive). If you are in the area it is definitely worth doing. The trail is about 2 miles round trip with lots of cliff hiking/climbing, though for the most part for climbing there is ladders.

September 15th 2022:

On our second day we hiked some of Jorden Pond Path, hiked to the top of both South and North Bubble (beware, there is no bubble rock on North Bubble). Jorden Pond Path was pretty easy and we did all of the east side of the path (about 1.5 miles round trip). Then we climbed to the top of South Bubble and from there we hiked to the Bubble Rock, a massive rock that is precariously balanced on the edge of the cliff.

Then we hiked down South Bubble and then we hiked up North Bubble. If you want great views North Bubble has them. If you want to see the Bubble Rock and you want the easier of the two, then South Bubble.

September 17th 2022:

On our third day we hiked to the top of Penobscot Mtn. via Jorden Cliffs trail. Jorden Cliffs trail did not have very good views, but it did have great views from the top of Penobscot Mtn. On our way down, we hiked down Jorden Ridge. In my opinion if you do it you should do Jorden Cliffs to Penobscot Mtn., then go down Jorden Ridge (if you want to have the best views on the way down).

September 18th 2022:

On our fourth day, we decided not to hike and instead ride on one of Acadia's many carriage roads. The carriage roads were all built by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. in the attempt to keep cars off the island, he seceded until 1929 when the first cars arrived on the island. The ride we did was around one of the largest lakes on Mt. Desert Island, Eagle Lake was about 4.75 miles long around the entire perimeter of the lake.

September 19th 2022:

On our fifth and final day, we decided to hike Pemetic Mtn. and the west side of Jorden Pond which all added up would be 7 miles. It was one of my favorite hikes after the Beehive and Pemetic Mtn. was very technical, tough Jorden Pond Path is one of the easiest hikes in the entire park. A lot of the western part of Jorden Pond Path is a narrow boardwalk with lots of stopping points which are pretty wide.
