East Coast Trip Part Six
November 13th, 2022
After Washington, D.C. we went to Luray, VA where we went to Luray Caverns one time and Shenandoah National Park three times.
October 2nd 2022
On the day we arrived, we went to Luray Caverns where we walked 1.25 miles of paved trail throughout the cave. The cave was discovered in 1876 and is over 64 acres in all of the charted area. The cave also has hundreds of strange rocks and also has many small ponds and puddles that rarely drain.
October 3rd 2022
After Luray Caverns, we hiked to Mary's Rock in Shenandoah National Park. It was our first hike in the park and had decent views (most of the views were obstructed by clouds). It was the second coldest hike we did in the park while here. This trail is a part of the Appalachian Trail (A.T.), so if you do it there may be a lot of thru-hikers.
October 4th 2022
After we went to Mary's Rock, we hiked to the summit of the highest mountain in the park, Hawksbill Mountain. Although there were no views, it was in the middle of a rain cloud and if you looked over the edge, it was raining from below onto you and it was an experience of a lifetime. Also when hiking you could only see 30' max in any direction. It was our coldest hike in the park.
October 5th 2022
On our last full day, we hiked to the summit of Stony Man Mountain. It was our warmest hike and had the best views. The trail we took had several false summits with great views and the end had amazing views of the surrounding area. The trail is a part of the A.T. and can have a lot of thru-hikers.
