November 21st, 2022 by Brom Taulborg

Miramar Beach, FL, Ocmulgee Mounds, GA and Chickamauga Battlefield, GA

Miramar Beach, FL / Point Washington State Forest:

After Huntsville, AL, we went to Miramar Beach, FL. We stayed at Camp Gulf and several sites were directly on the beach! While we were here, I also saw the Blue Angels fly over our campground and the Blue Angels support aircraft, the C-130J, Fat Albert several times. Our bike ride at Point Washington State Forest was just outside of Miramar Beach and we rode about 7 miles of trail there.

After Miramar Beach, we went to Orlando, FL until Hurricane Nicole made landfall on the Bahamas (our campground was in the path of Nicole). Nicole ended up hitting our campground two days after we left, so we cut our trip short missing Everglades NP, Biscayne NP, Big Cypress NP, and Big Bend NP. So, we went to Macon, GA for the night were we went to Ocmulgee Mounds NHP (Ocmulgee is pronounced: Oak-mull-gee). While here, we went to the reconstructed Earth Lodge, which you can go inside and and see the 50 seats which were believed to be used for meetings which was super cool.

Chickamauga Battlefield, Chickamauga, GA

After Macon, we went to Chickamauga battlefield where we drove on the the Tour route which stopped at all of the key spots at Chickamauga Battlefield. This park also includes Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, TN. The park also has hundreds of memorials throughout ranging from 2' x 2' x 2' slabs of granite to 80'+ tall memorials.
